E-Books at UC Library

Guide to accessing and using e-books at University of Canberra.

ProQuest Ebook Central Accessibility

Ebook Central is designed for patrons with accessibility needs, particularly the blind and visually impaired. They do this by:

  • Targeting AA conformance level to W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.0) for features and functions
  • Certifying for use with major screen readers (JAWS and VoiceOver)
  • Formatting book content to be readable online and offline

Turning on Accessibility Mode: 

Patrons using a screen reader may turn on accessibility mode themselves – no librarian or tech support needed!

For patrons who don’t use a screen reader but have accessibility needs, accessibility mode can be requested for their account at ebooksupport@proquest.com.

EBSCO Ebook Accessibility

EBSCO aims to making it's content accessible to all users. EBSCO is currently targeting WGAC 2.0 and their content is available by using the following screen reader/browser combinations: 

  • JAWS + Internet Explorer 11
  • NVDA + Firefox

VitalSource

VitalSource offers users a range of accessible options including; 

  • 4 font sizes
  • Colour and contrasts 
  • Accessible and compatible with assistive technology - Including icons.

Inclusion and Engagement

If you are a student with a disability and/or ongoing health condition, the I&E team can provide you with specialised support and information to facilitate equal participation in your educational journey at UC. This support can include requests for your text books in an alternate format and assistive technologies.
