UC Library has an e-preferred policy for buying books. This means that the Library will purchase the electronic version in preference to print. In doing so, the Library will take the suitability of format for particular discipline areas into consideration. This guide will guide will help you to navigate, download and print e-books.
Access to Library e-books is via the library catalogue or through the A-Z of databases. To access the full text, you will need to log in via ezProxy with your UC credentials (student or staff number and password).
The UC Library subscribes to 3 major E-book providers;
- ProQuest Ebook Central
- EbscoHost
- VitalSource
To navigate these platforms, please use the side tabs in this guide. Here you will learn how to access, download and print e-books.
Like print books, it is important to remember to "return" your e-book once you have finished accessing it. This will free up access for other users. At UC we have e-books with 1 user access, 3 user access and unlimited access. It is important to note this access and be aware that sometimes all copies of a particular book will be in use, and you may not be able to access it until it has been returned by the current user.
• Increased availability (e-books can be accessed 24/7, from anywhere with an internet connection, not just when the Library is open)
• No waiting for a copy to become available if others are using it (depending on the lending model)
• No late fines
• No possibility of losing or damaging e-books and having to pay replacement costs
• Additional functionality such as navigating to specific chapters, noteteking, highlighting, copying text, downloading and printing
