EndNote: Cite While You Write

Cite While You Write

The Cite While You Write (CWYW) feature should automatically install into Word when you install EndNote. If you find the CWYW toolbar missing from the top of Word, please see the troubleshooting page of this guide.

CWYW inserts your EndNote references into the document you’re writing. It creates intext citations and the reference list and allows you to update your reference once in EndNote and have that correction carried through your whole document.

There are a few different methods to insert citations into your document and a couple are shown below.

If you are using a style with footnotes, please create the footnote first in Word before inserting the citation.

  1. Click the EndNote 21 tab along the top row.
  2. Click the small image above Insert Citation. This will open a search box.
  3. Search for your reference using the author’s name, the title of the reference, or keywords. Select the correct reference then click Insert. You should now have an in-text citation and a reference list depending on the style.

  1. Select the reference(s) you wish to insert into your document
  2. Click Tools, Cite While You Write [CWYW], then, Insert Selected Citation(s). You should now have an in-text citation and a reference list depending on the style.

CWYW also has keyboard commands available.
