Eligible article types

These article types are eligible under this agreement:

  • Original Paper: Standard article, usually presenting new results; articles published under this article type may also be referred to as Original Research, Original Article, Original Paper or Research Paper
  • Review Paper: Standard article, interpreting previously published results
  • Brief Communication: Short article submitted for rapid publication that exhibits the same structure as a standard article
  • Continuing Education: Article forming integral part of further education (usually medical)

Limitations of the agreement

  • The 2025 agreement provides for an allowance of 3,511 articles to be published open access with no transactional APCs across all participating CAUL Member institutions - see this link for the current number of article approvals.
  • Articles must be accepted for publication on or after 1/1/25 to be eligible.
  • Springer Nature charges additional fees for page and/or colour fees. Authors should check each journal’s submission guidelines to ensure that they will not be subject to any other fees or charges.

Creative Commons licenses

Articles may be published under the author's choice of the following licences:

  • CC-BY
  • CC-BY-NC

The Creative Commons licenses allow reuse (some with conditions) while protecting the authors' rights of acknowledgment as authors. Authors retain copyright.

Researchers who require a CC-BY-NC-ND licence should contact the editors for the relevant journal.

For more information on Creative Commons licenses see the home page of this guide.

How to submit your article

Submission process:

  • Follow the publisher's usual article submission process via the journal’s homepage
  • On acceptance of the article, the publisher will ask the corresponding author to complete a form (publishing agreement)
  • The corresponding author selects open access and confirms the licence type (e.g. CC-BY)
  • The APC is automatically waived for authors who have
    1. used an institutional email address belonging to one of the participating institutions
    2. selected a participating institution as their institutional affiliation from a drop down list.
  • For articles identified as eligible to be covered by an open access agreement, the corresponding author will be presented with confirmation that they can publish open access with their fees waived
  • The approval manager at CAUL will approve articles within 3 working days
  • Once approved the article is immediately published open access

Corresponding authors are identified in the system via at at least one of the following data elements during submission:

  • Use of UC email address (COMPULSORY)
  • Input of institutional affiliation when prompted
  • Completion of the form whilst on campus (IP authentication)

The approval manager will approve your article's eligibility based on your institutional affiliation, article type and journal name. Once your article is approved, you will be notified by email and your article will proceed to publication.
