After the cap is expended, no further approvals will be possible. Authors will be able to either publish behind the paywall and upload the accepted manuscript to the institutional repository as open access, following an embargo period, or pay the article processing charges.
This agreement allows for open access publishing with no transactional article processing charges (APCs) in more than 2000 Springer hybrid journals:

The Creative Commons licenses allow reuse (some with conditions) while protecting the authors' rights of acknowledgment as authors. Authors retain copyright.
Researchers who require a CC-BY-NC-ND licence should contact the editors for the relevant journal.

Corresponding authors are identified in the system via at at least one of the following data elements during submission:
The approval manager will approve your article's eligibility based on your institutional affiliation, article type and journal name. Once your article is approved, you will be notified by email and your article will proceed to publication.
