E-Books at UC Library

Guide to accessing and using e-books at University of Canberra.

About ProQuest Ebook Central

ProQuest Ebook Central has a wide selection of e-books in all subject areas. You can access these ebooks via the Library catalogue or your course reading list.

Some ebooks have unlimited user access, others limit how many people can read at one time. If you are reading online, please close your browser when you are done to release the book to other readers. A book marked 'non-linear lending' means that multiple people can use it at one time, up to a total limit of 365 loan days per year.

The Library provides access to some ProQuest titles via an Demand Driven Acquisitions (DDA) model, where we have links to books which we do not yet own. With this model, the provider automatically charges UC for the books at the time that they are used. Expensive titles included in the DDA are 'moderated', meaning that you will need to send a request to purchase the book from the Ebook Central page - this purchase is usually handled by library staff on the next business day.

Reading online

If possible, please read online rather than downloading the whole book - selecting 'download' checks out the book to you and prevents others from reading it.

You can read the entire book online by clicking the "read online" button pictured below or select a chapter to read:

Printing

Printing and copying allowances for each book are displayed on the Book Details page. The allowance will reset after 24 hours, giving you the full number of pages to copy/print/download again.

To print a chapter, scroll down to the Table of contents and click the "read online" option next to the chapter you are interested in. Within the chapter view, look for the print icon (or PDF icon to save the chapter) in the top toolbar. Click on this and enter the number of pages you would like to print or select the whole chapter.

If the chapter is longer than the allowed pages for a day, you will need to select a smaller page range.

Downloading

Download the entire book

To download a book to read offline on your own computer or mobile device, click on the download book icon, below the image of the book. You will be required to install free e-book viewing software, see the Downloading page within this guide.

If convenient, please select the "read online" option rather than downloading the book, this ensures that when you exit the book it is automatically available for someone else to use.

Books in high demand may have the download option turned off.

Download a chapter

In the book information you will see how many pages you can download within a 24 hour period e.g. the title below allows 117 pages to be downloaded each day. This limit is set by Proquest.

To download a chapter, scroll down to the table of contents and click on "Download PDF."

If the chapter is longer than the allowed pages for a day, you will need to save a smaller number of pages and return tomorrow. Click on the chapter to open a reading pane, then select the printer icon to 'print to PDF.' Enter the start and end pages, making sure not to exceed the allowance.
